At over 10,000 feet, this 9.02 km engineering marvel has completely transformed how we travel from Manali to the Lahaul and Spiti valleys. It cuts the journey time by hours and keeps the route open for much longer during the winter.

However, because it is a strategic and high-altitude tunnel, strict rules apply. As locals who drive this route regularly, here is what you actually need to know before you go.

1. Timings & Weather Closures

• Standard Open Hours: The tunnel is generally open 24/7 for light motor vehicles.
• Maintenance: Occasionally, the tunnel is closed for a couple of hours in the early morning or late night for routine maintenance.
• Winter Travel (December – March): During heavy snowfall, local police will restrict movement to 4×4 vehicles only, or close the road entirely if black ice forms on the approach roads. Always ask your hotel or local driver for the morning traffic update before leaving.

2. The Golden Rules of the Tunnel

The authorities are incredibly strict about tunnel etiquette. Cameras are everywhere, and fines are issued instantly.

• No Stopping: You cannot stop your vehicle inside the tunnel for photos or any other reason (unless there is a breakdown/emergency).
• Speed Limits: The strict speed limit inside is 40 km/h to 60 km/h.
• No Overtaking: Stay in your lane. The tunnel is two-way (one lane each direction).

3. What to Expect on the Other Side

When you enter from the South Portal (near Manali), you leave a lush, green landscape. When you exit the North Portal into Sissu, you step into the Lahaul Valley—a stark, rugged, high-altitude cold desert.

Local Tip: The altitude hits you fast on the North Portal side. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and don’t exert yourself immediately if you aren’t acclimatized.

• Traffic Nightmares: The road to Old Manali is steep, incredibly narrow, and single-lane in many spots. In peak season, a 2 km drive can take over an hour.
• No Parking: If you are driving your own car, parking in Old Manali is nearly impossible.
• Noise: With cafes playing music late into the night, getting a quiet, peaceful sleep can be difficult.

The Prini Advantage (South Manali)

Prini sits just 3 kilometers south of the main Manali town, on the left bank of the Beas River. It offers the classic Himalayan experience that most people travel to Himachal for in the first place.

• Unobstructed Views: Because it is less congested, properties in Prini offer sweeping, panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks and apple orchards.
• Easy Access & Parking: Prini is on the wider Naggar Road. You don’t have to fight through the main town traffic to get to your hotel, and properties here (like The Sunset Haven) have ample, safe parking.
• Absolute Peace: When the sun goes down, all you hear is the wind in the deodar trees. It feels like a true mountain retreat.

The Verdict: Stay in Prini for the peace, the luxury, and the views. When you want to visit a cafe, simply take a 15-minute cab ride into Old Manali.

How to Pack for a Winter Trip to Himachal Pradesh

Packing for a winter trip to Manali, Spiti, or Shimla isn’t just about bringing your thickest jacket. Mountain weather is unpredictable; it can be freezing in the shade and surprisingly hot in the direct afternoon sun.

Because our Himparadise team lives here year-round, we know exactly what works and what doesn’t. Here is your definitive winter packing list.

1. The Art of Layering

Do not rely on one massive, heavy jacket. If you get warm walking, you’ll sweat, and when you stop, that sweat will freeze and make you colder.

• Base Layer: Thermal inner-wear (top and bottom). Merino wool or synthetic materials are best. Avoid cotton as it traps moisture.
• Mid Layer: A fleece jacket or a warm wool sweater. This traps your body heat.
• Outer Layer: A windproof and waterproof jacket. The wind chill in places like Sissu or Rohtang is what makes it feel freezing.

2. Footwear is Make or Break

Sneakers and canvas shoes are dangerous on ice and useless in the snow.

• Bring waterproof trekking shoes or snow boots with a deep, grippy tread.
